Young people
Leap Confronting Conflict has always believed that young people are not the problem, they are the solution.
The Youth Agenda
Leap believes passionately in young people and in the ability of young people to take a lead in their own lives, in their peer groups, and in their communities.
We aim to build a legacy of conflict prevention for the future through training and supporting young people as peer leaders
Youth participation is at the heart of our work. Young people learn new skills then teach those skills to others. They work with Leap as peer mediators and youth trainers. Leap’s national and regional youth conferences provide a forum for networking and debate and are led by trained young volunteers. Many projects are guided or driven by youth Steering Groups. Young people often sit on or influence the Board of Trustees and senior managers.
The organisation is actively engaged in many of the networks which drive the youth agenda in the UK today. We work with Youth Access and the National Youth Agency, and are active members of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services, the British Youth Council, London Youth and the Anti-Bullying Alliance.
Leap’s programmes for young people can directly contribute to the National Healthy Schools Programme, emotional literacy and SEAL objectives, Emotional Health and Wellbeing, Citizenship and PSHE Curricula and contribute significantly to the five Every Child Matters Outcomes:
Be Healthy
Young people’s emotional and mental health and well being is supported through Leap’s group work, personal development and conflict resolution training.
Stay Safe
Young people are skilled and supported to create and take responsibility for safer environments for themselves. Young people are trained by Leap to support others and create safer schools and local communities.
Enjoy and Achieve
Young people develop personally, emotionally and academically. They gain confidence, skills, Leap certificates, accreditation, awards and recognition.
Make a positive contribution
Young people are helped to develop socially. They learn to prevent and manage conflict in their own friendship group, family, school or community; many volunteer and become young leaders, learning not only to better manage changes and challenges in their own lives but also to support, mediate and train their peer group; some go on to form a local or school resource to prevent or reduce bullying, discrimination and violence; they can join or set up a peer mediation scheme, a peer support group, a buddy scheme. Some go on to train adults or work as a volunteers in Leap’s PeerLink project – planning and running training events, conferences and a website for others. Some become Leap young apprentices or freelance trainers. All go on and cascade their learning to others in the school or community.
