Preventing Racist Violence
Leap’s Preventing Racist Violence project aims to change the attitudes and behaviour of potential or actual racists.
The Preventing Racist Violence project addresses issues of identity and prejudice with young people. Working both in schools and the community, the project runs week long training programmes for young people that support them to recognise and deal effectively with prejudice. The young people receive training which supports them to challenge racist comments appropriately and to deliver one hour workshops to their peers.
Leap’s approach centres on a peer education model. Initially the work supports young people to look inwards and explore aspects of their own identity. Once awareness and skills of these issues have been developed the young people are trained to deliver workshops that explore issues of identity and prejudice in their school or community.
Benefits for young people attending Leap’s project:
- Students learn more about issues of identity and prejudice
- Participants develop skills to deal with prejudice in the school
- Development of greater leadership skills
