Preventing Knife Crime
Leap’s Fear and Fashion project was set up to reduce violence, weapon carrying and fear of violence in young people’s lives.
Leap has been working in partnership with Westminster City Council since 2007 to address issues relating to young people’s weapon use in the borough. We work intensively with young people deemed at risk of weapon carrying and also preventatively with young people in schools. Leap trains the young people to deliver one hour workshops to their peers on the causes and consequences of knife carrying.
The peer led anti-knife crime workshops use a variety of techniques (drama, discussion, games) to explore issues of weapon use and are facilitated by young people that have direct experience of the issue being discussed.
Benefits for participants in the project:
- Participants felt more confident in their ability to stop small conflicts from escalating and felt the training made them more confident in their ability to deliver a conflict resolution workshop
- Many graduates of the programme have gone on to apply the skills in vocational roles within Youth sector
