Leadership Programme
Developed in our work with young men in Young Offenders Institutions and developed further through community programmes in the UK and South Africa, the Leadership Programme helps young people transform the role they play within their community
The Leadership Programme enables young people to consider their choices and the impact they have on themselves and others. By exploring their patterns of behaviour, participants are able to examine the difficult situations they face, identify the benefits of taking responsibility and create new strategies for themselves when faced with conflict. Young people participating in this programme increase their personal and social development, challenge their prejudices or beliefs and develop their leadership potential. The course can be offered with accreditation at either level 1 or 2.
The skills and knowledge gained can be used to then support their peers to take similar steps, embedding conflict resolution practices work in their local community and beginning to influence others towards positive outcomes. The experience of seeing peers, who have been viewed as troublemakers, making a positive contribution to their community offers young people a powerful message of hope.
The subjects covered by each training programme are flexible and can be adapted to the group’s needs. This enables us to explore thematic areas which may be of interest or relevance to the young people and their communities including:
- Identity and prejudice
- Gangs and territorialism
- Tackling bullying
- Weapons and knife crime
Leap’s Leadership programme can be tailored to be delivered over a number of weeks or consecutive days to help ensure that regular learning takes place and the programme fits with other core subject areas, particularly employability, personal social development and Foundation Learning programmes.
