Response to the riots
Find out what we are doing in response to the disturbances in London and across the UK last August.
Leap has been working with young people, our expert trainers and sector partners to draw up a constructive and sustainable response to the issues that gave rise to the recent public disorder events in London and across the UK last August.
We received funding from Trust for London to co-ordinate a constructive sectoral response to London Youth Violence following on from the disturbances in August 2011. The purpose of the work was:
- To contribute to the immediate prevention of further violence and unrest
- To begin to change the nature of the dialogue, which currently seems to be creating a false dichotomy between police/Government on the one side and young people as a homogenous group on the other
- To develop the voice of the young people who choose not to be involved in the violence
- To create a meaningful and effective response to our communities’ experiences
Since August 2011 Leap has co-ordinated the following key activities
- Established the Resilience Consortium of 29 organisations and established a Steering Group.
- The Consortium Steering Group has met 3 times
- 1 event for practitioners and professionals
- 1 event with 20 young people
- Response to Recent Disturbances policy paper
- Clore Social Fellow Secondee to develop the work
- Met with the Riots, Communities and Victim Panel
The group has identified (from analysis of Ministry of Justice statistics of those convicted during the disturbances) that 18-24 year old offenders are particularly vulnerable. Officially classified as adults, offenders in this age range fall through funding and policy gaps, yet in reality require a range of developmental support to effect positive transitions into adulthood.
The Consortium has designed a programme to support these young people in their communities upon their release and is now seeking funding for it.
