Facts and figures in 2008:

Leap Confronting Conflict

  • 270 organisations worked with
  • 1,900 adults trained
  • 7,160 young people worked with
  • Impact – 40,000 young people in local schools and communities benefit from the work through mediation and learning cascaded by project participants and adult learners.

PeerLink Project

  • 32 schools and organisations worked with
  • 30 young volunteers across the UK
  • Young people volunteered over 1500 hours to PeerLink
  • 1,600 PeerLink members supported from across the UK
  • 500 young people and 50 adults gained skills through workshops and conferences
  • Impact – From evaluation of 100 mediations in schools, 90% ended in agreement or apology. If agreement has not been reached, 76% of young people surveyed thought the conflict would have continued or escalated, potentially resulting in violence.

Quarrel Shop Project

  • Delivered 2 open Quarrel Shops and worked intesively with 33 young people from across London
  • All gained Leap Certificates
  • Recruited 2 Apprentices who worked directly with 280 young people and 100 adults
  • 6 young people trained as young trainers graduated in November 2009

Schools Programme

  • Peer mediation training for Year 10 students.
  • Asked ‘did you enjoy the training?’ the average rating was 4.8 (5 is excellent, 1 is poor).
  • Asked ‘how easy did you find it to participate?’ the average rating was 4.1.
  • Impact – 86% said they’d apply their new skills with friends.
  • 80% said they’d apply their new skills with siblings, or in the playground.
  • 77% said they’d apply their new skills with parents or teachers.

What do we achieve?

Outcomes achieved through our work include:
Young people gain confidence, skills and certificates and go on to further education, training, employment
There are more peer mediation schemes in schools, with more skilled and confident young mediators.
Community based youth centres, young offender services, housing projects, social inclusion projects and so on are better resourced as practitioners become skilled to tackle youth conflict issues through Leap adult training

Impact achieved through our work includes:

  • Local communities benefiting from a reduction in youth conflict and violence
  • Teachers freed up to teach and schools become safer and more positive learning environments.

Leap’s work in local communities and schools contributes to current definitions of what works in promoting community cohesion:

  • Developing the role of young people as cohesion champions
  • The duty of schools to promote community cohesion
  • Young people as conflict resolvers in inter-generational and territorial conflict
