RIOTS IN LONDON - INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
Leap Confronting Conflict was saddened to learn about the riots in London over the last 48 hours.
Through our specialist work with young people, helping them to understand and respond to conflict, we understand very well the frustrations that, when unmanaged, can lead to flashpoints.
However, we abhor violence in any form, and recognise the tragic effects that the rioting has had in the local community, devastating local businesses, and leading to people losing their homes and their livelihoods.
Leap’s experience has shown that Summer holidays are always challenging, and that it is necessary to invest in young people’s activities during this period. Furthermore, spending cuts have led to increased unemployment in already deprived areas, with a subsequent growth in numbers of young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training.
However, we believe that conflict is inevitable in the lives of young people, but that they have the potential to contribute constructively to their communities.
Josh Brown, 19, a young volunteer who has turned his life around since working with Leap said:
“Young people don’t get heard enough. Don’t judge young people because of what’s happening. I know that when young people feel rejected, or ignored, or that people are against them, that’s when there’s a danger that words become reality, and that conflict can escalate.“
Leap’s work has shown that young people can be the solution to the problems that communities are facing, and that the very large majority of young people will condemn the violence.
